Code of Conduct 

Effective Date:  January 1 2022 

The following Code of Conduct outlines the expectations for members of the Organization for National Gang Information & Awareness (ONGIA). This Code is intended to ensure a professional, respectful, and supportive environment for all members and stakeholders involved in the work of ONGIA. By becoming a member, you agree to adhere to these principles. 

1. Respect and Professionalism 

  • Respect for Others: Members shall treat all individuals with dignity and respect, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or any other characteristic. Harassment, discrimination, or bullying in any form will not be tolerated. 

  • Professional Behaviour: Members shall maintain a high standard of professionalism in their conduct, including interactions with colleagues, clients, and the public. This includes acting with honesty, integrity, and accountability in all professional matters. 
     

2. Confidentiality and Privacy 

  • Respect for Privacy: Members must respect the confidentiality of personal and organizational information. Any sensitive data shared by members, clients, or stakeholders should be protected and not disclosed without appropriate authorization, unless required by law. 

  • Compliance with Privacy Laws: Members must comply with applicable privacy laws, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and Ontario's privacy regulations, ensuring personal information is used only for intended and lawful purposes. 
     

3. Accountability and Integrity 

  • Ethical Conduct: Members are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards and demonstrate integrity in all actions. This includes avoiding conflicts of interest and disclosing any potential conflicts when they arise. 

  • Responsibility for Actions: Members are responsible for their own actions and decisions. Misconduct or unethical behaviour will be addressed according to ONGIA’s policies and procedures. 
     

4. Collaboration and Teamwork 

  • Positive Engagement: Members shall engage in a collaborative and constructive manner, working together to achieve ONGIA's mission and goals. This includes offering support to colleagues, sharing knowledge, and contributing to a positive, team-oriented environment. 

  • Respect for Diverse Perspectives: Members shall value diverse perspectives and encourage inclusive practices in decision-making, ensuring everyone has a voice in discussions and activities. 
     

5. Compliance with Laws and Regulations 

  • Adherence to Legal Standards: Members must comply with all applicable laws and regulations relevant to their professional conduct and the work of ONGIA, including those related to anti-gang activities, human trafficking, and law enforcement practices. 

  • Commitment to Public Safety: Members are expected to prioritize public safety and adhere to all standards in the course of carrying out their responsibilities, especially in law enforcement and community-related matters. 
     

6. Reporting Misconduct 

  • Duty to Report: If a member becomes aware of any conduct that violates this Code of Conduct or that may harm the reputation or integrity of ONGIA, they have a duty to report it promptly to the appropriate authorities within ONGIA. 

  • Protection Against Retaliation: ONGIA will not tolerate retaliation against any member who reports misconduct in good faith. All reports will be taken seriously and investigated accordingly. 
     

7. Disciplinary Action 

  • Consequences of Violations: Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of membership or other corrective measures, depending on the severity of the violation. 

  • Fair Process: Any disciplinary action will be carried out in a fair, transparent, and consistent manner, with respect for due process and the opportunity for the member to provide their perspective. 
     

8. Commitment to ONGIA’s Mission 

  • Support for ONGIA’s Goals: Members are expected to support the mission, vision, and values of ONGIA, which include addressing gang-related issues, human trafficking, and promoting awareness and training across Canada. 

  • Advocacy and Education: Members should be advocates for the work ONGIA does, engaging in educational efforts, community outreach, and sharing resources that further the organization’s impact in combating gang-related violence and crime. 
     

9. Acknowledgment and Agreement 

By becoming a member of ONGIA, you acknowledge and agree to abide by this Code of Conduct. This commitment reflects your dedication to maintaining a professional, ethical, and supportive environment for all members and stakeholders involved in ONGIA’s mission.
